When you purchase a new printer you receive a certain amount of free ink included. Customers don t realise that even though the printer is low-priced the ink replacements are very overpriced. The ink market now utilizes the some business patterns as King Gillette used to predominate the Razor Market. It can leave you wondering if it s cheaper to purchase a new printing machine. For many customers the solution is compatible printer ink.

The switch to compatible inks is to be expected considering the high prices charged by makers. According to The Register some brands of printer ink cost seven times more per millilitre than a bottle of Dom Perignon (1985). Further reports have compared costs against Human Blood, penicillin, vodka and crude oil, all of which are much cheaper.

The big printer makes view compatible inks as a big threat to their businesses. It s not surprising that there are numerous issues made to prevent competition. A lot of the present ink cartridges contain data chips that monitor the use of ink. A chip needs to be present for the printer to function. Formulating these chips can present difficulties for the manufacturers of compatible inks. These extra barriers do make it tougher for firms to develop compatibles. There are however a number of companies that do succeed. If your printer contains a chip reader you must ensure that the compatible cartridges you buy will work with it.

Many compatibles makers have been sued by printer makers. Static Control Components (SCC), a North Carolina based business fought against a court case brought by Lexmark. Customers with Lexmark cartridges can use the firms own toner refilling scheme. Lexmark printers contain a technology that makes the printer inoperable when it finds that the cartridge was not refilled by Lexmark. The case revolved around an alleged DMCA violation by the compatible maker. The court fight lasted for seven years with the outcome that the Lexmark toner loading program was pronounced not to be copyright-able, opening the doors for compatibles producers. After seven long years of legal wrangling and appeals, Lexmark lost the case.

Not all makers of compatible cartridges are the same. There a large numbers of firms creating compatible inks going from very small firms to humongous multinationals. There are huge variations in quality between the different manufacturers and cartridges. Taking a chance on compatible inks often pays off. If you are not sure about a maker, remember that you can often try five or six different ones and still pay less than for one original ink. Picking Out a good quality compatible ink can often save large amounts of cash and still have superb quality prints. There are sizeable price variations on ink cartridges between retailers.

Compatible inks are available for lots of brands including IBM, Kodak and Primera. These compatibles are developed by a variety of firms including 5 Star.
