The Facts You Need to Know about Botulinum Medicine
Posted in University of Medicine at 7:36 pm |

Botulinum medicine (shortened to BoTox) is rapidly becoming fashionable in Sydney society in fact it is becoming an essential part of a beauty routine for people in the Harbour City. But I am always stunned by the ridiculous myths in connection with this treatment. Here I have included a selection of the myths that I encounter working as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Urban Legend # 1: I might not be able to express myself normally!

The human face has around sixty muscles. These muscles usually work in harmony, however from continual movement fine lines can start to form. Too great a dose of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the facial muscles becoming less taut. The amount used by most doctors are designed to make you appear refreshed, yet you will of course maintain your normal expression.

By using small quantities of the preparation in exactly the right tissues you should get a reduction in the lines without any compromise in facial expression.

Urban Legend # 2: Botulinum is poisonous!
There is a grain of truth in this. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact scientific nomenclature. Too large a dose can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and even may cause serious illness.

However to maintain some perspective: an old pharmacist’s saying states that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large amount of any medication will result in sickness. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.

Urban Legend # 3: BoTox hurts!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician utilises a hypodermic needle finer than a human hair. Some people liken the injections to a mosquito bite. Definitely not as bad as getting a vaccination.

Urban Legend # 4: BoTox will numb the feeling in my face!
Not true. BoTox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerve fibers. BoTox only affects the relaxation of muscular tissues.

Urban Legend # 5. You can’t stop getting BoTox or else you will age faster than before!
Also wrong.

One set of injections is effective for approximately 3 months. Any treatments after the first one should be effective for a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually reappear as the muscle recovers its normal function. Even So they will not be more pronounced than before the treatment.

As A Matter Of Fact any lines should be be softer than if you hadn’t had BoTox treatment - even should you don’t continue the treatment. This is obviously so due to the fact you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the BoTox was active.
