Sydney Botox Clinics - about it All
Posted in Be Beautiful, University of Medicine at 12:26 am |

Sydney Botulinum treatment (Botox for short) is fast becoming ingrained in Sydney society and now it has become an essential part of a beauty routine for some individuals in the Harbour City.

Yet I am frequently astonished when I hear the various urban legends and half truths which surround this treatment.

I have outlined below a selection of the myths that we come across daily in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.

Misconception Number 1: I won’t have the ability to use my facial muscles normally!

The human face has 60 or so muscles. Their continued use over a period of time may cause the formation of expression lines. Too large a dose of Botulinum Toxin can lead to the musculature of the face appearing over relaxed. The dose used by most physicians are designed to make you appear ‘refreshed’, however you will continue to be just as animated.

Therefore a carefully calculated dosage of Botox in the appropriate place means an expressive face is kept whilst any fine lines are smoothed.

Misconception Number 2: Botox is a toxin!
This to a small extent is correct. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact scientific terminology. An overdose may relax facial muscles that you do not want relaxed or may even cause sickness.

However to keep things in perspective: an ancient chemist’s saying states that ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. A large amount of any drug will result in sickness. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.

Misconception Number 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
Your hairs are thicker than the hypodermic needles we have at Star Cosmetic Medicine. A lot of individuals say that the shots are not as sore as getting bitten by a mosquito. It for certain is less painful than a procedure like a vaccination.

Misconception Number 4: I might lose sensation in my face!
Completely false. Botox targets the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax your muscles is affected by Botox.

Misconception Number 5. You must keep having Botox or the wrinkles become more noticable!
This is also wrong.

You can expect the treatment to be effective for up to 3 months. Any further treatments after the first consultation should be effective for a few weeks more. The lines will slowly reform as the muscle returns to normal. Nevertheless they won’t be any deeper than before the treatment.

In fact the wrinkles will in general be less noticeable than if you had never undergone Botox - even when you never persevere with the treatment. Primarily due to the fact that your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
