One of the most effective (and slightly barmy) ways of saving money at a wedding, is to cater it yourself. This is actually far more within your grasp than you might first think. More and more women are getting stuck in when it comes to the catering side of things. By all means, have a professionally made or decorated tiered cake if you so wish, but it’s perfectly possible to knock up a meal for 150 guests without breaking too much of a sweat. The key is to choose food that can be prepared in advance rather than assembled on the day. You could make canapés like sausage rolls, or the old fashioned pineapple and cheese sticks, ahead of time and refrigerate. It’s probably best to have more cold canapés than hot for your own ease. Why not opt for a cold buffet of dressed salmon and potato salad if it’s a summer wedding? This is always a crowd pleaser. You must also plan ahead so that nothing can take you by surprise. Knowing things like how much oven space you need and where items can be stored or refrigerated, is crucial. Finally get friends and family to help. Who doesn’t like being assistant chef to a stressed bride!
