Health jobs are booming and are expected to remain hot prospects well into the next decade. With the need for more health care professionals as the population ages, there are calls for more assistants, making certified nursing assistants in great demand.
A certified nursing assistant helps the nurse care for the daily living needs of a patient. In Portland, there are dozens of certified nursing assistant jobs available at any given time, in hospitals, senior centers, retirement communities and medical groups. But what’s needed in order to join the field is certified nursing assistant training. Certified nursing assistant training is a six to 12 week course in a medical facility, community college or technical school that teaches basic nursing skills, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and how to control infection. All are important in backing up the medical staff and caring for patients who often only see the doctor once a week even in acute situations.
Another job in high demand in the health field is medical coder. That’s an individual who properly reviews medical records, making sure to include the proper code for medical treatments and hospital procedures. This has become particularly important in this era of rising costs and dropping revenues. Doctors and hospitals are most concerned about making sure they get every last dollar available to them and they are most eager to hire someone who can help them get that job done.
To qualify for a medical coding position, it’s necessary to receive coding certification that includes passing an exam testing the applicant’s knowledge of coding and pricing procedures, supply codes and diagnosis codes that doctors use for billing their services to insurance companies. Once the basic coding certification is achieved, it’s possible to go on to specializing in coding certification for hospital and provider claims. Coding certification is often combined with other jobs in the medical field to enhance the skills that can be offered an employer.
